New Treasure Revelations
The Ḍākinī Heart-Essence and treasure teachings
Revealed by the great tertön Dudjom Lingpa
The New Treasure Revelations of the Wrathful Tertön Dudjom Lingpa
The New Treasures of Dudjom revealed by the great wrathful vidyādhara and tertön Dudjom Lingpa (1835—1904) comprise:
The profoundly secret cycles of the Ḍākinī Heart-Essence (Khandro Nyingthig)
The Three Cycles of the Most Secret Profound Dharma (Zab-chos gsang-ba skor gsum)
The Three Cycles of Pure Vision (Dag-snang skor gsum)
Altogether, these amount to seventeen volumes.
The Manner in Which These Treasures Arose
These revelations manifested in the following stages:
At the age of three, he was urged and inspired by the treasure-protecting deities.
At the age of six, Vajravārāhī bestowed prophetic authorisations concerning both mind-treasures (dgongs-gter) and earth-treasures (sa-gter).
At the age of eighteen, he experienced direct visions of deities and gurus, together with innumerable pure visions beyond the scope of imagination.
In particular, in his twenty-third year, the Fire Snake year (1857), during a state of pure visionary experience, he met the Lords of the Three Families (Rig-gsum mgon-po). On separate occasions, he received and consumed wondrous crystal and gold reliquary caskets, as well as a turquoise stūpa. From that time onward, the three pure-vision cycles arose in his mind as if stamped or engraved upon his continuum, later appearing exactly as they were written down.
This is clearly described in Dudjom Lingpa’s outer autobiography:
“One evening, when I was twenty-three, in a dream a white man with a golden top-knot appeared, who said he was Mahākaruṇika (Ārya Avalokiteśvara). He said:
‘Son, through the power of pure aspirations and the merit accumulated over many lifetimes, you possess the fortune of complete conditions---both of place and of path. Now the karmic time has come for you to accomplish at least some benefit for beings. Therefore, eat this casket.’
He gave me a small crystal casket, about the size of a thumb. On one side, like a reflection appearing in a mirror, the five-coloured seed syllables OṂ HŪṂ HŪṂ HRĪḤ ĀḤ shone vividly. The moment I swallowed it, the Noble One said:
‘This is the profound Dharma called Mind-Treasure Bursting Forth from the Great Expanse (Zab-chos dgongs-pa klong-rdol).’
He then dissolved into me.”
On another occasion, while he was engaged in the recitation and meditation retreat of Mañjuśrī Siṃhanāda, a sublime fragrance pervaded his dwelling. Mañjuśrī appeared directly before him and bestowed a small golden casket, about the size of a sparrow’s egg, saying:
“Eat this.”
He swallowed it immediately, and Mañjuśrī declared:
“This is the Pure-Vision Wisdom Net (Dag-snang ye-shes drva-ba).”
Mañjuśrī then dissolved into him.
On yet another occasion, he encountered a terrifying and awe-inspiring form of the Great Wrathful One, Mahākāla, said to be the Secret Lord himself. Overcome with fear and trembling, he heard the deity speak:
“Great being, do not fear me. Do not be afraid. Do not tremble.
I am the protector of the Buddha’s teachings, the embodiment of the combined power of all the Victors of the three times---the Great Glorious Vajra Mahākāla, source of all haughty spirits. You are an emanation of my own mind. I appoint you as my messenger to accomplish the benefit of beings.”
He then gave him a small turquoise stūpa, about the size of a thumb, within which appeared clear syllables and symbolic diagrams of dependent origination. He said:
“Eat this.”
Although the casket became invisible even as it was held in his hand, he swallowed it. The deity then proclaimed:
“This is the Treasure of the Expanse of the Sky of Dharmatā (Chos-nyid nam-mkha’i klong-mdzod).”
He then dissolved into him.
From that time onward, the three pure-vision cycles manifested in his mind exactly as though stamped upon his continuum.
Subsequently, he personally met Guru Padmasambhava (Orgyen Tso-kyé Dorjé), who bestowed upon him the complete ripening empowerments of the oceans of sūtra and tantra, together with the liberating instructions and all supporting transmissions*. (When he met the vidyādhara Hūṃkāra face to face, the following symbolic script (brda-yig) was shown from the palm of his hand; this is recorded clearly in the “Autobiographical Record of Spoken Teachings” (rnam-thar zhal-gsung), volume 44.)*
In his twenty-fifth year, on the twenty-fifth day of the mid-winter month of the Earth Sheep year, at Taktsé Shawa Drak in Ser-mé Nga-la (Golmok, Amdo), he extracted five copper treasure chests containing the Three Cycles of the Most Secret Profound Dharma. In accordance with prophecy, he perfected all the sealed sections, and from his thirty-first year (Wood Ox year, 1865) onward, he gradually transcribed them from yellow scrolls into ordinary book form.

Regarding the classification of the earlier revelations (the Earlier Dudjom Treasures, Gong-ma):
Dudjom Lingpa himself spoke of three mind-treasures and four cycles of the most secret profound Dharma, including earth-treasures.
Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje classified them into three categories: earth-treasure, pure vision, and mind-treasure.
Jadrel Sangay Dorji stated that there are two principal divisions: the more extensive earth treasures and the more profound mind treasures.
(For fuller details, one should consult Dudjom Lingpa’s autobiography and recorded oral teachings).
Concluding Aspiration
May the profound treasure teachings of the Lotus lineage of the Early Translation Great Perfection, the chariot of the essential meaning, the teachings of Dudjom Lingpa, remain undiminished until the end of existence, and be upheld through both explanation and practice.
